Best UV Protection for Fishing

UPF 50+ UV Protection Fishing Shirt in the Sun

The best sun protection for fishing is with UV protection fishing shirts. Not only are UV fishing shirts great for their reliable sun blocking performance, but they’re also stylish and comfortable. And let’s face it, the better you feel while fishing, the more you’ll want to keep fishing! Of course, UV protection fishing shirts aren’t your only option for fishing sun protection, but they are your best option. Continue below to find out why!

You Never Need to Reapply UV Protection Fishing Shirts

Unlike with sunscreen, UV protection shirts don’t need to be reapplied every two hours. This means less time putting on sunscreen and more time actually spent fishing. In addition to saving time, fishing with UV shirts will save you money. In the long run, and especially if you participate in extended outdoor activities like fishing, UV shirts can save you and your wallet from costly sunscreen purchases. Properly applied every two hours, a $12 tube of sunscreen may only last one day. After just a few days or weekends of fishing, your sunscreen costs could exceed the price of a quality UV protection fishing shirt.

Fewer Sunscreen Applications = Less Greasy Hands

Although modern sunscreens are much improved compared to those of the last century, they still have their flaws. A common flaw of sunscreen, especially for fishing, is the greasy residue that’s often left on your hands. Slippery hands are bad for several reasons while fishing, not the least of which is your ability to hold your rod and reel. Don’t let the big one (or your entire rod) slip away because you can’t keep the sunblock off of your hands. Instead, keep your palms grease-free and trust the dependable sun protection of UV fishing shirts.

More Than Just Long Sleeves

What’s better than long sleeves? Long sleeves with hidden thumb loops! Rayward Apparel’s Sun Bound collection of UV protection fishing shirts feature hidden thumb loops. These ensure that your sleeve cuff stays at your wrist, offering as much protection as possible. While fishing, you’ll spend lots of time with your arms up, whether casting, reeling or toasting your big catch, so choose a UV fishing shirt that’s designed for an active person.

In addition to long sleeves and thumb loops, the best UV protection fishing shirts feature hoods. These lightweight, UV-protective hoods offer even more protection from the sun’s harmful rays. When you’re on the water, and especially when you’re fishing and looking out over the water’s surface, a UV-protective hood is important. With a hood, your ears and neck are protected from both direct and reflected UV rays.

Don’t Settle for Less Than UPF 50+ Protection

The ideal UV protection fishing shirt offers UPF 50+ sun protection. UPF 50+ is the highest certified rating, and is reserved for fabrics which block greater than 98% of UV rays. All of Rayward Apparel’s products are certified UPF 50+, providing the clothing equivalent of SPF 50+ sunscreen. However, in contrast to sunscreen, our UPF fishing shirts offer all-day protection from the instant you put them on.

UPF 50+ UV Protection Fishing Shirt in the Sun

Comfort Matters for UV Protection Fishing Shirts

When it comes to choosing your go-to UV protection fishing shirt, don’t skimp on quality fabrics. Look for something that’s soft and lightweight so you look forward to wearing it all day. Equally important, especially around the water, is fast-drying and moisture-wicking apparel. Rayward Apparel’s Sun Bound sun protection hoodie offers all of these advantages with a lightweight, 170 GSM fabric you can wear all day long.

Rayward Apparel’s UV protection fishing shirts are available now in both men’s and women’s. They’re ultra soft, lightweight, breathable and provide UPF 50+ sun protection—ideal for day after day of fishing.

Best Sun Shirts For The Beach

Sunny, Sandy Beach Aerial View

A day at the beach should be fun, relaxing and safe. It should not, however, be shortened by lack of sun protection or ruined by fears of sunburn. Whether you’re spending the day at your local beach, or miles from home and on vacation, you need to wear the best sun shirts for the beach: lightweight hoodies.

Hopefully your beach is the sunny escape you need, but even perfect beaches are full of invisible, damaging UV rays. These harmful UV rays pour down from above, reflect up from sand, and even penetrate through and bounce off water. With little relief from the sun, even underneath an umbrella, your best protection is a high-performance sun shirt. We recommend Rayward Apparel’s lightweight hoodies with UPF 50+ protection.

To find out why our UPF 50+ lightweight hoodies are the best sun shirts for the beach, continue below. From the breathable fabric to the dependable UV protection, our Sun Bound long sleeve hooded shirt is your best bet for the beach!

Lightweight & Breathable Beachwear Hoodies

A hot, sunny day at the shore requires a breathable shirt that feels lightweight and cool. Our Sun Bound collection of UPF 50+ shirts blends natural cottons and viscose from bamboo for a lightweight fabric. As a result, it’s as perfectly suited for beach volleyball as it is for post-game drinks at the club house!

Beach Volleyball Court with Sand

Durable in the Sand, Soft on Your Skin

For active beachgoers, your best shirt is one that stands up to your abuse, day after day, wash after wash. By blending cotton, viscose from bamboo and lycra, we’ve created an ultra soft, yet extremely durable fabric. Plus, it stretches while resisting pilling. Rayward Apparel’s Sun Bound lightweight hoodies, for instance, benefit from the best traits of each fabric type. Therefore, you benefit from shirts perfectly suited for whatever your beach day brings—from frisbee to fishing, paddleboarding to reading. Whatsmore, the long sleeve hooded Sun Bound collection is great because of its simple care instructions and machine-washable construction!

Our Beach Sun Shirts & Hoodies Dry Quick

Beaches = water, so the best sun shirts for the beach need to be fast drying. The quick-dry lightweight shirts of Rayward Apparel’s Sun Bound collection do just that! Even with our long sleeve shirt or our lightweight hoodie—which offer the largest area of protection and are the best suited for a long day in the sun—you aren’t walking around with a heavy, wet shirt stuck to your skin all day.

Sun Shirts Save You Money on Sunscreen

A full day at the beach is going to call for several applications of sunscreen, which consume your time, require help and cost a lot of money. It’s not uncommon to go through an entire bottle of sunscreen lotion during just a single day at the beach—and that’s before you start passing it around for all your friends and family that forgot their own sun protection. The full, reliable protection offered by our lightweight hoodies ensures proper UV protection without the need to cover your entire body with sunscreen. Of course, all exposed areas, such as your face and hands, still need the UV protection of a broad-spectrum sunscreen, but your bottle will last a lot longer when you aren’t using an entire tub on your torso and arms!

UPF 50+ UV Protection

The biggest factor in choosing the best sun protection shirt for the beach is in the UPF rating. Nothing can ruin the perfect day at the beach quite like a nasty sunburn, and you’re especially vulnerable in or on the water, so choose the highest possible UV protection rating with a lightweight shirt rated at UPF 50+. A UPF 50+ protection rating tells you that an article of clothing blocks 98% of the sun’s damaging UV rays, the equivalent of constantly wearing SPF 50 sunscreen, but without the greasiness, odor, cost and time-consuming applications (and reapplication, and reapplication, and reapplication…).

Rayward Apparel’s Sun Bound long sleeve lightweight hoodies check every box for effective, sun-protective beachwear, and we trust they will become your go-to beach shirt for years to come!

When to Wear a Sun Hat

Sun Protection Hat for Women

Sun hats are a critical component of sun protection. When combined with UPF apparel and proper sunscreen application, you can virtually eliminate your exposure to UV damage. The key, however, is knowing when and how to protect yourself. Fortunately, when it comes to sun protection hats, the answer is simple: wear a sun hat as often as you can.

Not the answer you were looking for? Hear us out, and we’ll explain why you really should wear a sun protection hat all the time. Of course, we’re realistic and understand that you can’t always wear a hat. That being said, let’s identify when a sun protection hat is MOST important.

Most Important Day to Wear a Sun Hat

Before venturing out in the sun, be sure to check the Ultraviolet (UV) Index for the day. The UV Index measures the strength of the sun’s UV radiation on any particular day. UV Index values range from 0-12, with the higher number indicating a higher risk of UV damage. On days with a UV Index of 3-7, you have a “moderate to high” risk of UV damage and should wear a hat while also limiting your sun exposure, especially during midday hours. A UV Index of 8 or greater indicates a “very high to extreme” UV risk with the potential for skin damage in less than 15 minutes! In the U.S., many days fall within this highest risk range, and not only during the summer. Any time the UV Index is 8 or higher, sunscreen, UPF apparel and sun protection hats for women and men are essential.

To track the UV Index, we suggest bookmarking this site for easy access. You can also use the tool below to quickly lookup the UV index for a particular location. Try it now:

Most Important Time to Wear Your Sun Hat

The sun’s UV radiation varies throughout the day, with midday being the most intense. Depending on your location (and daylight savings), this midday “solar noon” window occurs between 10 AM and 4 PM. If you’re going to be outside for even 10 minutes during this window, it’s time to put hats on heads, in addition to broad spectrum sunscreen. During this midday period, the sun is at its strongest, and sun protection hats for men and women are non-negotiable. Choose one that’s lightweight and breathable and you’ll actually feel cooler, even when the day is hottest.

Sun Protection Hat for Golf

Most Important Activities for a Sun Protection Hat

The activities that most require sun protection hats for women and men are the activities that might require you to be outside on a day with a higher UV Index, or in the sun during the intense midday solar noon. Of course, this includes a huge range of activities, including sporting events, gardening, yardwork, fishing, running, concerts, festivals, barbecues, pool parties and so forth, but you get the idea.

It’s because this range of activities is so broad that Rayward Apparel is launching our first UPF sun protection hats for men and women. Made of UPF 50+ rated fabrics, our sun protection hats will keep you cool, comfortable and protected. Keep in mind that all sun protection hats must still be paired with broad spectrum sunscreen to ensure protection against indirect UV rays. Indirect sun damage can happen when the sun’s radiation bounces off of reflective surfaces, such as water, sand, cement, ice and snow.

Before you go, be sure to shop Rayward Apparel’s new UPF sun protection hats for men and women.

Best Gaiter For Fishing

Kayak Fishing with Neck Gaiter

Around here, neck gaiters are considered essential equipment for any fishing trip. Whether it be a few casts from the pier or an all-day deep sea excursion, you just need one. That’s because fishing face masks are one of the best ways to protect your face and neck from UV rays. To help you find the best fishing neck gaiter, continue below as we spotlight our favorite fishing face mask: Rayward Apparel’s lightweight Del Mar UV Neck Gaiter.

Rayward Apparel's UPF 50 Fishing Neck Gaiters

UPF 50+ Protection for a Full Day on the Water

The best fishing neck gaiters are made out of UPF rated fabrics, which are proven to block harmful UV rays. Rayward Apparel’s fishing face mask is no exception, featuring UPF 50+ protection that blocks more than 98% of UV rays. This is especially important around the water because UV rays reflect off the water’s surface towards your face and neck. Therefore, when you’re on the water, you need protection from both direct UV rays pouring down from above, and reflected UV rays bouncing off of the sand and surf. Compared to sunscreen SPF ratings, our UPF 50+ rating is essentially the fabric equivalent of SPF 50. The big advantage, however, is not having to reapply UPF fabrics every two hours throughout the day. After all, you’re out there to catch fish, not a sunburn!

Extremely Soft with the Right Amount of Stretch

Another reason we love Rayward Apparel’s Del Mar UPF fishing face mask is because it is extremely soft against your skin, yet features the perfect amount of stretch and flex. This specific blend of synthetic fibers were chosen for their ability to stretch to fit around your neck, over your ears or over your entire head. Best of all, you’ll actually want to wear Rayward Apparel’s fishing face mask because it feels super soft against your face without any unnecessary seams.

Our Best Fishing Neck Gaiter is Lightweight

When you’re out fishing in the warm sun, you might choose heavy tackle, but the last thing you want is a heavy gaiter. Fortunately, Rayward Apparel’s Del Mar UPF 50+ fishing face mask is extremely light and breathable. In fact, it’s so lightweight, you might even forget it’s on! It’s easy to both breathe and speak through our best fishing neck gaiter, so you’ll be able to communicate effectively. This is especially important when fishing from a boat where verbal instructions or alerts need to be shared quickly. Therefore, choose a fishing gaiter that checks both boxes for lightweight and breathable performance.

A Detailed, Dependable & Durable Fishing Face Mask

At first glance, or when only viewed online, many of the most popular fishing gaiters look the same. However, when worn and viewed up close, you can really see the difference in the details. For instance, Rayward Apparel’s UPF fishing gaiters have finished seams for a more durable face mask. This gives our seams the strength needed to stretch to fit your needs. At the same time, it also provides a smooth-edged seam that you won’t even notice against your neck and head. Finishing the edges of the closed tube also prevents the ends from curling and unraveling, which can be a problem with inferior alternatives.

Finally, a Truly Versatile Fishing Face Mask

Oftentimes with clothing, especially outdoor performance apparel, less is more. This is certainly the case when it comes to designing versatile fishing face masks. You may have noticed some fishing neck gaiters hyping additional “features” like breathing vents, mesh panels, nose flaps, ear loops and so on. There are two common problems with many of these features. The first is that they can lower the UV protection factor of the gaiter. The second is that they can create weaker sections of fabric that fray and tear. We prefer the simplicity of a single layer of fabric that best performs its main function, protecting your skin.

Another advantage of Rayward Apparel’s streamlined fishing headwear is that you have more freedom in choosing how you want to wear it. The most popular style is to wear the gaiter pulled up to just beneath your eyes, which offers safe UV face protection from your nose and ears down. This is just one of many ways to wear our fishing face mask, however. Other popular techniques include wrapping it around your head as a hat liner, keeping it scrunched loosely around your neck, pulling it entirely over your head like a hood, or twisting it into a beanie. With its simple, closed tube design, you have many more style options available.* That being said, since our fishing neck gaiter is designed for UV protection, we suggest wearing it so as to maximize your sun protection.

How to Get the Best Fishing Neck Gaiter

Rayward Apparel’s UPF 50+ fishing neck gaiter is available now, and available in multiple colors.

Bonus: If you forget to wear your gaiter face mask and end up with a nasty sunburn, here’s a helpful video with some tips for how to treat your sunburn and alleviate the pain. If you only learn one thing, it should be don’t get burned again!

* Rayward Apparel’s fishing face mask is not designed to prevent the spread of disease. While perfect for fishing, these masks have not been tested for their effectiveness at preventing the spread of disease, such as COVID19, and should therefore not be used as an alternative to any approved face masks.

Best Sun Shirts For Fishing

Deep Sea Fishing Rod and Reel

Of all our favorite outdoor activities, fishing might demand the most constant sun protection. Whether out on the boat, off the pier, from the shore out or in the middle of the stream, you’re exposed to the sun’s harmful UV rays from not only above, but also from reflections bouncing off the surface of the water. Plus, the last thing you want for an eventful fishing outing is for it to end early. And especially not because of inadequate sun protection or fear of sunburn. Thus the need for comfortable, all day sun protection provided by UPF apparel. The question, then, is what is the best sun shirt for fishing? Continue below to learn about the long sleeve lightweight shirts perfect for your next fishing trip.

Lightweight and Breathable Fishing Shirts

A sunny day of fishing demands a cool, lightweight shirt that doesn’t feel heavy. It also shouldn’t make you feel like you’re trapped in a plastic bag. To address this, Rayward Apparel’s Sun Bound collection uses a unique blend of natural cottons and viscose from bamboo. The result? Long sleeve lightweight shirts that feel equally appropriate fishing all day or grilling your catch.

Kayak Fishing at Sunset

Soft, Yet Durable UV Protection

For those relaxing fishing retreats, your best shirt is one that makes you feel as comfortable as possible. Rayward Apparel’s Sun Bound collection of UPF 50+ shirts, for example, achieves its ultra soft feel with a blend of cotton and bamboo viscose. Of course, a soft shirt is no good if it doesn’t last. Fortunately, our fabric blend was also chosen for its stretch, durability and resistance to pilling. As a result, it could be your go-to fishing shirt for years. Plus, it has easy care instructions so you don’t have to fear washing your sun shirt with your typical laundry. Talk about activewear with easy care!

Quick Drying and Moisture Wicking Sun Shirts

It’s hard to go fishing without getting wet, so choose a fast-drying shirt that wicks moisture and keeps you dry. Long sleeves are ideal for protecting your arms from sun damage, but when your cuff or sleeve gets wet, you need a long sleeve lightweight shirt that dries fast and stays light, allowing you to focus on reeling in the big one! Shirts made with viscose from bamboo, such as Rayward Apparel’s Sun Bound collection, dry quickly to keep you comfortable.

Boat with Fishing Rods

Range of Motion for Easy Casting

The best fishing shirt is tailored to avoid bulk, bagginess and excess weight, but with enough stretch and room for movement so you aren’t restricted from making the perfect cast, over and over and over. A raglan shoulder and sleeve design allows for the maximum range of motion with both style and performance with your sun protective apparel.

Long Sleeve UPF 50+ Sun Protection

The final and most important factor in finding the best sun protection shirt for fishing is in the UPF rating. The sun can be brutal, especially out on the water, so look for the maximum UV protection signified by a UPF 50+ rating, which indicates an effective filtering of 98% of harmful UV rays.

Rayward Apparel’s Sun Bound long sleeve lightweight shirts meet all of the above criteria, culminating in the best UV protection fishing shirts. Cool, breathable, soft, quick drying and UPF 50+, our long sleeve sun shirts are your perfect fishing buddy.

When To Wear A Sun Gaiter Face Mask

Mountain Biker Wearing Sun Gaiter

Sun gaiter face masks serve a range of purposes, from protecting and comforting, to insulating and styling. Rayward Apparel’s gaiter face masks are great at meeting the demands of several situations in many different climates. Continue below for highlights of the most important and most common times to wear a sun gaiter face mask.

Wearing a Sun Gaiter Face Mask for UV Protection

The primary purpose of Rayward Apparel’s Del Mar gaiter face mask is to protect you from the sun’s harmful UV rays. Therefore, the most important time to wear your neck gaiter is in the sun, even for a few minutes. This is because the sun can damage unprotected skin in as little as 5-10 minutes. Even if you’re wearing sunscreen, or if your sunscreen isn’t at least SPF 30 (the minimum recommended by The Skin Cancer Foundation for outdoor activities), a sun protection gaiter face mask is great for ensuring you didn’t miss any of spots. This is especially important when you’ve already left your house and the convenience of mirrors, and are blindly reapplying sunscreen to your face and neck. In short, if the sun will be hitting your face, you better have it properly protected. Sun gaiter face masks are simply the fastest, most cost-effective and reliable way to protect your face and neck!

Using a Neck Gaiter to Keep Cool

You can also wear a face mask gaiter when you need to keep cool. For starters, this is because you’ll be protecting your face and skin from the hot sun. Additionally, the moisture-wicking fabric draws sweat away from your skin to help it evaporate quickly. This then assists your body’s natural responses to keep you even drier and cooler. Lastly, you can wear a face mask gaiter that has been dipped in cool water for quick, refreshing relief! This trick can be very useful when out on the open water fishing or anywhere where shade isn’t easily accessible.

Wearing a Gaiter Face Mask to Stay Warm

Another useful time to wear a face mask neck gaiter is when you want to keep warm. This may sound like a contradiction of the previous point, but in fact some of the same attributes that help face mask gaiters keep you cool, also make them effective at keeping you warm. Worn properly, a gaiter face mask allows moisture to escape. In the cold, wet equals cold. Additionally, a very thin insulating layer of air will remain between your skin and the outside air. You can also fold a gaiter into a double-layered balaclava, which provides even more warmth and insulation. Plus, you get all of this while still maintaining breathability. Lastly, if the warmth you need isn’t on your face, you can reposition your neck gaiter into a beanie,

Face Mask Neck Gaiters as Fashion Statements

One of the most overlooked benefits of gaiter face masks are their ability to be worn as fashion pieces, most often to manage and style one’s hair. When wearing a neck gaiter for its style benefits, you have a range of options. For example, face mask gaiters can be transformed into hairbands, foulards, neckerchiefs and more, all with a few folds. Imagine being able to turn your neck gaiter into a head scarf that simultaneously keeps hair out of your eyes AND protects against UV damage!

When NOT to Wear a Sun Gaiter

You won’t always need to wear a sun protection gaiter. For example, indoors or when protected by other means of UPF sun protection. Fortunately, sun protection face mask gaiters are just as easy to remove as they are to apply. Therefore, if you’re wearing one for any of the reasons outlined above (and you should be), but later find yourself in a situation where you no longer need a face mask neck gaiter, it’s as simple as pulling it down around your neck, wrapping it around your wrist, or stuffing it in a pocket. Our best gaiter face masks occupy very little space and are easy to stash away whenever you don’t need them. Of course, thanks to their versatility and styling options, we trust you’ll find them to be useful in many situations.

Now What?

In summary, you should wear a UPF gaiter face mask whenever you might experience even as little as 5-10 minutes of exposure to UV rays. You should also wear a gaiter face mask when you need its heating/cooling attributes, as well as its style applications. Additionally, face mask neck gaiters are easier to apply than sunscreen. Sun protection gaiters also don’t require waiting to become effective, and are removable the moment you no longer need them.

They should therefore not be used as an alternative to any medically-approved face masks.

Best Sun Hat for the Beach

Beach sunset in California

What’s a beach day without some pleasant sunshine? To make sure you’re enjoying that sun, and not feeling its wrath, be sure to protect yourself with a UPF beach hat. With so many options to choose from, how do you find the best sun hat for the beach? The answer is simple: trust UPF 50+ bucket sun hats from Rayward Apparel. Keep reading to find out why our Sun Ops bucket sun hat is your best sun hat for the beach!

Bucket Sun Hats Keep You Cool

The busiest beach seasons are when the weather is warmest, so it’s important that your beach hat keeps you cool. The lightweight, breathable fabric of Rayward Apparel’s Sun Ops bucket sun hat actually helps your body stay cool. By blocking the sun’s UV radiation, a bucket beach hat helps your body maintain a safe core temperature. Plus, since our hat’s fabric maintains its UPF 50+ rating even when wet, you can soak your bucket sun hat in cool water for instant relief, or even wear it out into the waves!

Practical Style = A Practically Perfect Beach Hat

Rayward Apparel’s UPF beach hats are practically perfect in every way (Mary Poppins would be proud!), combining beach-going performance with practical features. For instance, the adjustable chin strap ensures a secure fit even under high beach winds. And if you take the boat out, you won’t lose your bucket sun hat in the wake! You can also adjust our favorite beach hat’s width using the discrete drawcord located on the back. This provides as snug a fit as you’d like with a circumference fit for you! What’s more, the entire hat is safely machine-washable, so you can easily wash off that ocean smell, sea salt and beach sand. When you’re done, just wring it out and put it back on or fold it up for compact, easy transport!

Walking on Beach without UPF Hat

All-day UV Protection with a Bucket Sun Hat

A good beach day is full of fun in the sun, but that comes at a cost of hours of exposure to damaging UV rays. The first step for any successful beach trip is planning for sun protection. Rather than hiding in the miserly shade of a few palm trees, or constantly shifting to stay beneath an umbrella’s moving shade, why not wear your shade? A bucket sun hat provides just that—wearable shade that you never have to chase!

The large, shapeable brim provides 360-degrees of protection from the sun. This means our Sun Ops bucket sun hat provides more protection than a baseball hat, which exposes your ears to the sun. Plus, with your brim angled properly, your bucket sun hat will help protect your nose, mouth and neck. Even still, protect against indirect UV rays reflecting off sand and water, and remember to watch your shadow. When in doubt, use this quick shadow test: if your shadow is shorter than you are, then the sun’s UV rays are strongest. This is the most critical time to have your hat on. Fortunately, this is also when your bucket beach hat protects your face and neck the most.

For your next beach trip, we can’t guarantee good weather, cool breezes and that perfect spot in the sand. However, we can guarantee the UV protection of our UPF 50+ bucket sun hat. Just remember, UPF hats and apparel should still always be worn with broad spectrum sunscreen because it’s nearly impossible to protect every part of your body with clothing alone. Nevertheless, for areas that can be protected with UPF fabrics, like your head, arms and torso, choose UPF 50+ rated protection from Rayward Apparel.
