What Constitutes a "Sun Shirt?"
More than anything, a “sun shirt” signifies a shirt’s ability to protect against the sun’s UV rays. However, less important than being called a sun shirt is being tested for sun protection effectiveness. This is measured using the Ultraviolet Protection Factor rating system, or UPF for short. Ratings range from zero (no UV protection) up to UPF 50+ (blocking more than 98% of UV radiation). For this reason, always check to make sure your sun shirt is UPF certified. Additionally, our Crescent City long sleeve shirts are certified at UPF 45, providing excellent UV protection. More Sleeve = More Protection
Both our Shoreline and Crescent City collections include short sleeve and long sleeve sun shirts. Because a short sleeve sun shirt offers less skin cover, it won’t be quite as protective on its own. However, regardless of which you choose, the fabric and UPF certification is the same when comparing short sleeve and long sleeve variations within the same collection. Because they offer greater UV protection, our long sleeve variations are more popular than our short sleeve sun shirts. However, there is a time and place for a short sleeve shirt, such as when layering with other apparel or pairing your shirt with broad spectrum sunscreen.
